Recently Have Basement Flooding? What To Do In The First Two Days To Prevent Damage

by Clara Nichols

If local area flooding caused your basement to fill with water, you'll want to do all you can to prevent damage from happening. Here are some tips for the best ways to prevent water damage.

Act Quickly

It is important that you act as fast as possible to remove the water from your home since the longer that the water is in your home, the more likely it will result in more mold growth. Your goal should be to remove all of the water within 24 hours. You can do this job you on your own with a submersible pump and a garden hose. Pump the water out as far away from your home as possible, rather than putting it into the ground right next to your home's foundation. It would be ideal if you can run the hose to a nearby sewer drain.

It is important that you are as thorough as possible when removing the water from your home. If the water raised several inches, there is likely water in wall cavities that you cannot see. You'll need to open up the walls to dry out these areas, as well as remove the physical water that has collected on your floor.

Circulate The Air

You'll want to do everything you can to remove as much moisture by circulating the air. This involves opening windows and using fans to push that moisture out of your house. If you can create a cross breeze using fans and basement windows, you will be very effective at removing moisture from the space.

Protect Yourself

Know that mold is likely to form by the second day after your basement has flooded. If you are still working in your basement to clean up the area or remove furniture, it is important that you wear personal protection gear when working in the space. You'll want to wear an N-95 mask to prevent you from breathing in mold spores, as well as goggles, gloves, boots, and a long sleeve shirt and pants.

Bring In Professional Help

By this point, you have likely done all you can do to prevent damage in your basement. Make sure you bring in professional help to deal with the cleanup and restoration. They will ensure that the space is free of any mold and that it is safe for you and your family.
