How To Get Water Out Of Your Basement And Dry Out The Space

by Clara Nichols

The first step in water damage restoration after your home has been flooded is to get rid of all the water. If a small area has been affected, you might be able to mop up the water with towels or blankets. However, when you're dealing with a basement flood, you may need heavy-duty equipment to get the water out and dry the space. Here are ways to dry out your basement after it's been flooded.

Pump Out The Water

The best way to get water out of a basement is to pump it out. This might take some time if there is very much water. If your power is out due to the flood, you may want to call a water damage restoration company to bring their equipment and hook it up to one of their generators so you can start pumping out the water.

Blow Dry The Floor

Once the visible water is removed, there will still be hidden water and moisture in your basement, especially if your basement is finished and has flooring, insulation, and drywall. Floor dryers are good for drying out a space that's been flooded.

These channel a strong stream of air to the floor that helps dry out the remaining moisture. If there are small puddles of water remaining, it might be quicker to remove those with a wet vac before using the floor dryers. The restoration company may need to bring in several dryers if you have a large basement.

Run A Dehumidifier

Basements are normally damp and humid, so it may take it longer to dry out completely since the room is under the ground. You can speed up the process by running one or more dehumidifiers in the space to pull moisture out of the air and out of building materials in the basement. If your basement has concrete walls and a concrete floor, there may not be a lot of restoration work necessary. If your basement is finished, the restoration company may need to install new flooring and walls. If the materials are wet and ruined, it's best to remove them and take their dampness out of the space so your basement can dry out faster.

If your basement doubles as a family room or spare bedroom, you'll want to take quick action to get the water out so the space isn't entirely ruined and so mold doesn't grow. If you attempt the process yourself, you may have to rent a lot of equipment, which might be difficult to do if other homes were flooded and water-removal equipment is in high demand. A water damage restoration company is a good solution since they have commercial, heavy-duty floor driers and other equipment they can supply along with a crew to get the basement dry and ready for restoration.
