Tips For Preparing Your Home For A Foundation Repair

by Clara Nichols

From doors and windows that stick shut to cracks in your walls or sunken floors, there are several signs that your home's foundation is in serious need of repair. Before a professional comes to make any necessary foundation repairs, it is critical to prepare your home to protect your property and make the repair process easier.

Prepare your home for a foundation repair by following these simple steps.

Get Your Yard Ready

Depending upon the nature of your foundation damage, the repair team may need to access the foundation from your home's exterior. Take these steps before the repair team visits your home to make their job easier and protect your lawn and foliage from damage:

  • Remove your grill, lawn furniture, lawn decorations, or any other obstruction that will get in the professionals' way.
  • Pick up any trash surrounding your home's exterior.
  • Consider relocating large shrubs or plants that will get in the way of the repair crew. Make sure the repair team is completely finished fixing your foundation before replanting the existing foliage or adding new plants around your home's perimeter.

Move any vehicles out of your driveway to allow work vehicles and heavy equipment a place to safely park while the foundation is repaired.

Get Your Home's Interior Ready

Ask the foundation repair professionals if they require access to your home's interior, including the first floor or basement. Remove any obstructions that will prevent the professionals from easily accessing the foundation, such as boxes in your basement or furniture in your first-floor sitting room. Create a clear path throughout your home as well.

Take down family photos from the walls or shelving on the walls over or adjacent to the work area. The equipment used to repair the foundation could cause vibrations that will damage your wall hangings or personal items.

Plan to Leave Your Home During the Repairs

Finally, whether the team is working on your home's exterior, interior, or both, consider leaving your home while the foundation is repaired. This protects you from being injured and allows the repair professionals easier access to all parts of your home. Rent a hotel room or stay with a friend, if the repair will take several days.

Take a few moments to prepare your home's exterior and interior before the professionals arrive to ensure the foundation team is able to safely and quickly access the foundation and perform the necessary repairs.
