Maintenance Tips For Your Washer And Dryer

by Clara Nichols

If you have recently purchased a new washer and dryer for your home, you will want to do everything that you can to ensure that these new appliances last as long as possible. After all, you made an investment in new appliances, and you want to see that investment through. To do this, you need to learn how to properly care for your washing machine and dryer. Keep reading to learn a few maintenance tips that will help.

Washing Machine Maintenance

When working to maintain your washing machine, it is important to avoid using too much washing detergent. Your washing machine should provide instructions on how much detergent to use based on the amount of clothes that you are washing. Believe it or not, too much detergent can leave a residue inside the machine that can get on your clothes and cause premature wear and tear.

In addition, you should use the right detergent. Some modern washing machines call for a certain type of detergent due to the fact that they are more energy-efficient and require a high-efficiency (and less sudsy) detergent.

It is also a good idea to avoid allowing wet laundry to sit in the washing machine, as this can allow mold to develop. The same is true if you close the lid immediately after washing a load of clothes. You should leave the door open after a load of clothes has been washed so that the inside of the washer can air out properly, preventing the growth of mold and mildew.

Dryer Maintenance

When it comes to the maintenance of your dryer, it is imperative that it is properly vented. Many dryers are vented with a plastic tubing that is inexpensive, but unfortunately, it is prone to cracking and melting. Therefore, you should replace that vent tubing with an adequate aluminum vent tube.

In addition, your dryer comes with a lint trap that needs to remain clean. It needs to be cleaned out regularly—after every load or two. If you fail to do this, your laundry will take longer to dry, and the risk of a fire starting will be much higher. Aside from the lint trap itself, the dryer exhaust vent needs to undergo an inspection and cleaning at least once or twice a year.

Finally, you should ensure that your dryer is stable. When the dryer is shaky, there is a higher risk of it failing on you prematurely. To check its stability, give it a good shake every now and again. If it is not stable, it will only take a couple of minutes to take care of the problem by adjusting its legs. A stable dryer will last much longer for you.
